Do you ever worry about getting locked out of your vehicle? Do you know what you would do if you ever lost or forgot your car keys? Getting locked out of your car can be an extremely stressful situation. It's all too easy to panic and forget what to do when this happens. But by making plans ahead of time, you can help reduce the stress and make the situation less unpleasant. Some things that you should try to remember include the following.

Don't mess with your vehicle:

After you try all of the doors to make sure that you didn't accidentally leave one unlocked, leave your car alone. There are a lot of videos online that supposedly show you how to get into a locked vehicle, but most of these should not be attempted by someone with no experience. You could wind up with a broken window or some other damage to your vehicle. Besides the fact that replacing a window possibly being even more expensive than simply calling an emergency locksmith in the first place, a broken window can provide thieves with an opportunity to take your car. A professional locksmith, such as one from Quick Lockworks, can get your vehicle open for you without risking potentially expensive damage as a result of their efforts.

Have a safe place to go:

Depending on where you are and how busy the locksmith is, it may take anywhere from a couple minutes to a few hours for an emergency locksmith to reach your location. In the meantime, you'll need somewhere safe to wait. A nearby 24-hour convenience store can make a good waiting location, but you should talk to the clerk and be prepared to purchase a soda or snack while you wait. By talking to the clerk and explaining the situation, you can avoid being mistaken for a vagrant and having the police get involved. If your municipality sells bus passes that don't have a set expiration date, consider carrying one around in your wallet. If you can't find somewhere nearby to wait, taking the bus to another location may be a viable alternative.

Don't hide a key:

It can be tempting to buy a magnetic key holder to hide a spare key on the underside of your vehicle to save yourself the expense of having to call a locksmith. Unfortunately, this can wind up backfiring on you. A hidden key is one of the first things that many would-be car thieves will look for if they're wanting to take your car. By all means, have a locksmith make duplicate copies of your keys. Simply leave them with family, friends, or in a drawer at home. If you lose your keys or lock them in your vehicle, and you can't get in touch with anyone who has your spares, you can take a bus or a cab home and have an emergency locksmith let you into your home so that you can get your spare set of keys.
