Posted on: 27 February 2017
If you need an extra set of keys, but are not looking forward to the additional cost that comes with copying an expensive transponder key, here are a few ways that you can save money.
#1 Go To Your Locksmith
The dealership will charge you more to make a new key; the fee is generally higher than you would find anywhere else. Locksmiths are now cable of copying and reproducing more than just metal keys. Locksmiths can use stock aftermarket key fobs instead of the dealership original keys. Stock aftermarket keys should work as good as dealer original keys.
Locksmith offers more affordable rates for key copies. They can recode a key fob for you and cut a key for you. Stop by your local locksmith and see if they can make a second electronic and/or physical metal key for your vehicle.
#2 Get Your Insurance To Pay For It
If your car keys were stolen or lost, you may be able to get your car insurance to pay for your new keys. Depending on the insurance coverage that you have, you may be able to get your insurance to pay for a new key to be made, to get you into your locked vehicle and a ride if you need one until a new key can be made. Read over your roadside assistance and other policies and figure out all that your insurance has to offer you.
#3 Purchase A Key Locator Device
Finally, if losing keys seems to be an issue for you, there are steps you can take in order to keep better track of your keys. First, purchase a key-locating devices. These devices work in a variety of different ways. You can have a receiving inside of your house that you press that will make your keys beep. You can also place a key-locating device that sends out a Bluetooth signal that you can track with your smartphone to help you locate your lost keys.
You can also go old-fashion and write or tape your phone number to your keys so that if you lose them and someone finds them, they can easily return them to you.
If you need an extra set of keys, go through your local locksmith instead of your local car dealership and save some serious cash. See if you can get your car insurance to cover the cost of replacing any keys that were lost and/or stolen.
