The Pros And Cons Of A Commercial Access System With A Keypad

Posted on: 19 May 2019

A commercial access system that does not require a key might be ideal for your place of business. Some systems require employees to swipe their badge or a special card in order to gain access, while some systems have keypads on which a PIN has to be entered in order for the lock to be opened. Keypad systems are ideal in many situations, but they do have their disadvantages, too. A few of the pros and cons of these systems are listed here, but you'll want to talk to a commercial locksmith about whether or not this is a good option for you.

Advantages

  • The code can be changed with ease. You may find that a situation might arise when you will need to change the code for your commercial access system. With a keypad system, this should be very easy to do. If someone gets fired and you want to make sure that they don't have access to the building, for example, you should be able to either follow the instructions from the access system's manual or get help from a commercial locksmith.
  • Employees don't have to keep up with a special access card. If your employees have to use a special card to enter the building, then there might be a time when they will forget to bring their card. This can make it impossible for them to enter the building. With a keypad system, though, you don't have to worry about your employees leaving a key or an access card at home.

Disadvantages

  • The wrong person could get the key code. Unlike with badges or cards, anyone who has the PIN can enter your commercial access system. This can be bad in some ways. For example, someone could tell a friend or family member the code, and that person might then be able to gain access to doors that they should not have access to.
  • Some people might have a tough time remembering the code. When setting a code for your keypad access system, it is important to choose a code that is not going to be too easy for a person to guess. The problem with this, though, is that some people might have trouble remembering the code. This can make it difficult for employees to gain access to the building or certain areas of the building when they need to.

Before having one of these systems installed, weigh out the pros and cons, and talk to a commercial locksmith. Then, you can decide if one of these systems might be right for your building or if you should explore your other options.
